Trout Unlimited Cleans Up West Mountain Road

Sunday, June 25, 2017

Members of the Fred S. Burroughs Chapter of Trout Unlimited recently participated in a Mosquito Control Awareness Litter Clean-Up that was organized by the Wallkill River Watershed Management Group, Sussex County Clean Communities, and the Office of Mosquito Control.

Participants listened to a presentation about how mosquito breeding habitat can be reduced by removing standing water sources from a person’s backyard. Then, the Trout Unlimited members helped pick up garbage and recycling off of West Mountain Road in Sparta, beautifying the area around Sparta High School and removing trash along the road where water could accumulate and create mosquito breeding habitat.

This effort is part of the larger commitment that the Fred S. Burroughs Chapter has made to Sparta Township. In 2016, TU members organized a Glen Brook stream restoration project in Sparta, less than 2 miles from the West Mountain Road clean-up site.
