Earth Week Celebration Returns to SCCC

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

NEWTON- To commemorate Earth Day, Sussex County Community College (SCCC) has partnered with the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group to plan an environmentally-themed outreach event for SCCC students and staff.

As part of the event, representatives of the SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group, Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority, SCCC Adventure Club, SCCC Greenhouse Club, and SCCC Student Ambassador Program led stations to educate participants about agricultural best management practices, recycling, aquatic insects, water pollution, bat boxes, and SCCC’s new greenhouse.

Through their participation in the event, SCCC students learned about the importance of taking action to protect Sussex County’s natural environment and even had a chance to teach students at Project Self-Sufficiency’s Little Sprouts Early Learning Center about natural resource protection. Through games, stories, and activities, college-aged students were able to share Earth Day lessons with preschoolers, resulting in a sharing of experiences among different age groups from the same community. The SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group and Sussex County Community College look forward to partnering together in the future to continue organizing ecological events to celebrate Earth Day.
