Girl Scouts Celebrate Earth Day with WRWMG

Girl Scouts from the Wallkill Valley Service Unit (Ogdensburg, Franklin, Hardyston, Hamburg) celebrated Earth Day with the Wallkill River Watershed Management Group by planting trees along the Sussex Branch Trail. The girls and their mothers took advantage of the beautiful weather and worked hard to plant approximately 100 trees and shrubs next to the Paulins Kill. Additionally, the Wallkill River Watershed Management Group’s (WRWMG) Education Specialist taught the girls how pollution enters local rivers and streams using a watershed model and had the girls examine live aquatic insects (macroinvertebrates) because people can determine water quality by studying which organisms are living in the river.

This was the 2nd year in a row that the Wallkill Valley Girl Scouts volunteered to plant trees with the WRWMG, and the two groups look forward to finding additional ways to work together in the future!
