Hampton Township Stormwater Campers Tour Lake Hopatcong

Friday, August 30, 2019

To cap off a successful year of Stormwater Summer Camp, students from McKeown Elementary School and their parents boarded a boat on Lake Hopatcong and learned about the history of the lake and the human impact on water quality. The trip was led by staff and volunteers from the Lake Hopatcong Foundation and was funded by NJ Future.

After the boat ride, students had a chance to collect macroinvertebrates (aquatic insects) from the Musconetcong River. Examining the types of insects found in the stream is important because it gives an accurate determination of the river’s contaminant level because certain insects are unable to survive in polluted streams. Once the insects were collected, students then used scopes to magnify the size of the insects for better viewing. Overall, it was a beautiful day on the lake and a perfect way to kick off the unofficial end of summer!
