Waste Storage Facility Now Complete

Friday, June 26, 2020

Eric VanBenschoten, of the WRWMG, working in partnership with NRCS and NJDEP, has completed Phase 1 of a manure storage project here in Sussex County. The concrete tank is designed to hold up to 6 months of animal waste (530,234 US gallons) from the dairy farm operation. Then, in the spring, the manure can be spread on the nearby crop fields as natural fertilizer. This process reduces the amount of chemical fertilizer that a farmer needs to purchase and also prevents animal waste from contaminating the streams and wetlands located close to the farm. The above picture captures the first day that the tank began collecting cow manure.
