Pope John High School Students Install Additional Rain Garden

Friday, October 28, 2022

Pope John High School environmental science students worked with Rutgers Water Resources Program and the WRWMG to complete a rain garden planting on the school’s campus. 19 high school students and community volunteers helped to plant 650 native flowers and shrubs within the rain garden.

Rain gardens attract pollinators and are a form of stormwater management designed to help reduce the amount of pollution entering local rivers and streams. The gardens are bowl-shaped to temporarily hold water after a rainstorm. They encourage stormwater to slowly infiltrate into the ground and replenish groundwater, which helps to reduce the volume of stormwater entering storm drains during each rainfall event.
