Wallkill Valley Girl Scouts Participate in Road Salt Study

Monday, February 06, 2023

Middle school Girl Scouts from the Wallkill Valley Service Unit worked with the WRWMG Education Specialist as part of a statewide road salt study being conducted with the NJ Watershed Watch Network. This winter, the girls will be testing different streams and lakes throughout the Wallkill River Watershed to assess how much road salt enters local water bodies after winter snow and ice storms. Excessive amounts of road salt in a stream can harm aquatic organisms so the girls’ data will be compiled with other citizen scientist data from throughout NJ to help experts make recommendations about how to lessen the impact of road salt to protect stream health.
