Sparta High School Seniors Continue Reforestation Effort along Wallkill

Monday, November 02, 2015

Approximately 75 ecology and zoology students from Sparta High School participated in a riparian reforestation tree planting day along a tributary to the Wallkill River. Planting trees at this location will help to eliminate invasive reed canary grass through shade production, while stabilizing the erosive banks and filtering out pollution from the nearby athletic fields. In total, the students were able to plant and protect 60 native trees at the site, 30 of which were silver maples that were harvested from the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge by canoe.  Both the students and teachers look forward to continuing to strengthen their partnership with the WRWMG and have asked to participate in another riparian reforestation day in the spring.
