16th Annual Earth Day Event Hosted at SCMUA!

In celebration of Earth Day, the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority (SCMUA) and the Wallkill River Watershed Management Group (WRWMG) hosted the sixteenth annual Earth Day Event on April 20th at the Solid Waste Disposal & Recycling Facilities in Lafayette, NJ.

More than 200 Sussex County students participated in hands-on activities designed to provide educational lessons about environmental issues. The Earth Day Event promoted environmental stewardship and showcased SCMUA’s solid waste, recycling, wastewater, and watershed programs. Students also enjoyed interactive stations on litter abatement, stream biology and pollinator plants.

The event consisted of a rotation of 6 stations led by SCMUA staff, vendors and community partners who delivered environmentally focused messages to the students and teachers.

A food drive was also conducted as part of the event benefiting the 1st Presbyterian Church of Branchville Food Pantry.

Event Activities:

• “Recycle Right!” relay race station with SCMUA and Sparta Recycling Coordinators.

• “How long does it take for litter to decompose?” with Clean Communities

• “How are landfills constructed?” with ARM, Inc.

• “What not to Flush” with Upper Wallkill Water Treatment Plant.

• Pollinator planting station with SCCC’s Agricultural and Horticultural Programs

• Identify macroinvertebrates with the AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassadors.
