SCAR Plants Trees at Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge
Thursday, May 09, 2024
The Sussex County Association of Realtors partnered with the SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group, Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge, and the AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassador Program to plant 250 native trees and shrubs on Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge property in Wantage Township. Volunteers worked with the staff of the different organizations to plant and properly protect the newly planted trees from wildlife damage by deer and voles. Trees are important to plant near rivers because they help keep the water clean and cool, reduce streambank erosion, filter polluted stormwater runoff, provide habitat for native wildlife, and suppress invasive reed canary grass that is growing in the floodplain. The trees were funded by the Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation and through grants secured by the SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group.
