A.P. environmental science students worked with the SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group and the AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassador Program to plant 250 trees and shrubs in Papakating Park in Wantage Township. During their field trip, the students learned about the importance of establishing forested buffers along streams and the many benefits that the trees provide, including wildlife habitat, stabilized stream temperatures, reduced erosion and sedimentation, and invasive species (reed canarygrass) suppression. In addition to the 250 containerized trees that were planted, Wantage Township DPW also helped plant an additional 20 native, balled and burlapped trees in the park. The balled and burlapped trees were funded using Open Space money allocated to the project by the township.
