McKeown School Students Learn About Road Salt

Wednesday, March 19, 2025

Hampton students from McKeown Elementary School worked with Kristine from the SCMUA-WRMWG to learn about the impact that road salt has on rivers and groundwater resources. Using the EnviroScape 3-D watershed model and online tools produced by Stroud Water Research Center, the students learned how urbanization leads to increased pollutant runoff to nearby waterways. Students also learned about the NJ Watershed Watch Network’s road salt monitoring program and were excited to hear that they can participate in the program next winter to build New Jersey’s dataset of which streams are impaired because of road salts (chloride).
