SCMUA Hosts Earth Day Event

Friday, April 25, 2025

The Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority (SCMUA) hosted its 18th annual Earth Day Celebration at the landfill and recycling center in Lafayette Township on April 15, 2025. 265 students from Hardyston Elementary School (2nd grade), Merriam Avenue School (4th grade), Pope John Middle School (5th grade), and McKeown Elementary School (5th grade) participated in the event. Students rotated through a series of 8 different hands-on stations focused on recycling, solid waste disposal/landfill construction, wastewater management, watershed restoration, aquatic insects, and microplastics. Station activities were led by the SCMUA’s Recycling, Wastewater, and Administrative staff, the SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group, Sussex County Clean Communities, ARM Group, and the AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassador Program. Sammy the Safety Seagull (the mascot of the SCMUA) even made an appearance during the event! Elementary schools that would like to participate in the SCMUA’s 2026 Earth Day event should reach out to krogers@scmua.org to reserve a slot on the waitlist.
