Sparta Glen Brook Restoration Project Enters Planting Phase

Tuesday, April 26, 2016

Throughout April, the Wallkill River Watershed Management Group, in partnership with Trout Unlimited, organized and led volunteer planting days along the Sparta Glen Brook. Kristine Rogers, of the WRWMG, has worked alongside volunteers, prepping the area for planting and demonstrating the proper planting techniques. Students from Sparta High School, Pope John High School, and Sussex County Community College, in addition to members of Trout Unlimited, Sparta Kiwanis, Sparta VFW, and local Boy Scout Troops 95 and 82 all provided assistance with the planting phase of the project. To date, over 1700 native tree and shrub materials have been planted on site, the majority of which were provided by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Additionally, 20 large 2” caliper trees from Mohawk Gardens in Sparta, NJ have been planted, helping to provide shade cover to the brook. Trout Unlimited and the WRWMG look forward to the unveiling of the restored park in mid-May.
