The Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group recently teamed up with the Sussex County Division of Engineering and representatives of the Office of Bridge and Traffic Safety to assist with the riparian reforestation component of their viaduct bridge construction project. Throughout the day, the SCMUA-WRWMG worked alongside Kelly Fedynich’s 6th-8th grade students from Franklin Elementary School, educating the students about watersheds, non-point source pollution, and the importance of forested river corridors to benefit aquatic insect and trout populations while improving water quality. In total, the students, SCMUA-WRWMG staff, and Division of Engineering staff helped plant and protect a total of 85 trees and shrubs throughout the Wallkill River floodplain. The SCMUA-WRWMG and the Sussex County Division of Engineering are looking forward to coordinating additional opportunities to work together to steward county open space lands in the future.
